Traditionally, this Christmas treat is supposed to be steamed rather than baked, a process that takes at least six hours--perfect for the slow cooker. (http://www.todaysbaker.com/blog/2009/10/21/christmas-plum-pudding-in-a-slow-cooker.html)

I also found a recipe for making it in a microwave (http://www.cheapcooking.com/Recipes/plumpudding.htm), but I must admit I have my doubts about whether it can really cook properly in five minutes on high. Julia Child's version (http://homecooking.about.com/od/dessertrecipes/r/bldes156.htm) is supposed to cook for half an hour on low, then five minutes on high.Amy Livingstonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16362533758291353748noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6276531209730408101.post-46033296606489959352010-12-07T20:02:33.583-05:002010-12-07T20:02:33.583-05:00I like my crock pot too.
I can vouch for the over...I like my crock pot too.

I can vouch for the overnight steel-cut oats. Especially with some dried fruit added.

I wouldn't think you could do a standard cake, but pudding-type cakes can work.

When you do splurge for a chicken, make stock with the bones. All the benefits you named for the veggie stock, plus it tastes better than prepared stock and is lower in salt (none unless you add it). I almost feel cheated when we buy chicken legs since we don't make stock from the bones (though I suppose we could....)

I've been told you can use it like a big rice cooker too, but I think the rice would stick unless you got the timing just right.

Overall, a bit bulky to store, and sort of retro, but definitely a good tool.Doug Bonarhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04833700146695394598noreply@blogger.com
